THOMAS R. PALMER is an equity member of the firm and serves as outside legal counsel for more than 500 business enterprises, professional firms and entrepreneurs. Tom’s main areas of practice include Corporate and Business Law, Mergers and Acquisitions, Employment Law, Tax and Estate Planning, and Litigation and Dispute Resolution.
Tom has been voted by his peers as a Leading Lawyer for many consecutive years and is a member of the Leading Lawyers Network.
Tom’s published works include “Evaluating the Enforceability of Non-Compete Agreements,” DuPage County Bar Association Journal, 1991. He also has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal
Tom is a regular lecturer at seminars and workshops sponsored by employers, trade associations and professional groups. Topics which Tom has addressed include starting a new business, buying and selling businesses, joint ventures, licence agreements, limited liability companies, operating agreements, shareholder agreements, employment agreements, incentive compensation arrangements, confidentiality and non-compete agreements, asset protection, business divorces, recruitment and hiring of employees, employee handbooks, wage and hour laws, the Illinois Wage Payment and Collection Act, the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, employee vs. independent contractor status, establishing and enforcing sexual harassment policies, disciplining and discharging employees, defending employment discrimination and wrongful discharge claims, and employee severance agreements.
Tom is actively involved in community affairs. He is one of the founders of the 600-member Schaumburg Business Association and served as Chairman of the organization in 2004. Prior to that, Tom served for more than 10 years as legal counsel of the Northwest Suburban Association of Commerce and Industry. Since 1986, Tom has served as legal counsel of the Woodfield Chicago Northwest Convention Bureau, and was honored by that organization in 1993 with the President’s Award, and in 2008 with the Bryant Award for outstanding service to the tourism industry. Tom also serves as a community member of the Quality Council that oversees patient safety and quality of care at the Alexian Brothers medical centers in Chicago’s northwest suburbs.
